The city of Jackson is getting a new park, which will be on the site currently occupied by the old Bemis Mill.
The landmark cotton mill, which was built back in 1900, will be demolished after repeated attempts to save it have not been successful. One estimate put an $8 million pricetag to bring the mill up to code. Now a brand new memorial park will be built on the land where the mill became a community staple and provided jobs for families in the area.
Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist noted there were no developers interested in buying the mill and with a memorial park going up on the land, it will still provide an opportunity to honor the families that worked there over the years.
